Xinomavro Brilliance: Exploring Navitas Winery's 2021 Vintage

By Yiannis Karakasis MW

I've previously shared about Maria Dimitriadis and Navitas Winery's exciting new venture in Pieria, Macedonia. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Olympus, their 16-hectare vineyard, owned by Maria's father for two decades, is situated in Litochoro at altitudes of up to 400 meters. While their focus remains on indigenous varieties, they also craft Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a rosé from Grenache Rouge.

Having recently sampled their lineup, I must admit that I was particularly impressed by their 2021 Xinomavro—it's truly exquisite.

This wine undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks, followed by a 12-month maturation period in French oak (comprising two-thirds of the quantity) and concrete tulip-shaped vats (one-third). The aroma is a captivating blend of Xinomavro's signature wet forest floor and dried herbs intertwined with notes of juicy strawberries and delicate flowers. On the palate, it bursts with youthful vibrancy, with its umami undertones just beginning to emerge.

This Xinomavro is a standout that could confidently hold its own alongside top wines from Naoussa and Amyndeo, sparking intrigue and delight among wine enthusiasts. As for food pairings, I highly recommend enjoying it with moussaka. I recently savoured this combination at Ateno in downtown Athens (full disclosure: I curate the wine list there), and it was truly magical.
