A red grape variety that is greatly associated with the huge production of sweet fortified red wines (PDO Mavrodaphne of Patras and PDO Mavrodaphne of Cephalonia). Mainly cultivated in the northwest corner of Peloponnese (Patra) and Cephalonia the new era of the grape is all about dry wines production. Full body reds with silky texture, high in tannins deeply coloured and moderate acidity. These wines are characterised by a fragrant nose of black ripe fruits, spice and most important a unique herbaceous aroma and a distinguished slightly bitter aftertaste adding complexity to the final product. Top examples are coming from old vines showing the varieties great potential.
