Mavrotragano

Red grape variety found in the Cyclades, mainly in Santorini; planted to other parts of Greece as well. Almost extinct, it was rescued by some of the island’s vintners. It is a dark thick skinned grape producing extremely low yields and consequently wines of great density, moderate levels of acidity high levels of tannins that demand time to mellow. High quality wines are produced but the true potential of the grape is still under research.
